What is dramalab

dramalab is a performing arts company that was founded in 1993 under The Instant Café Theatre Company and later became an independent company in 1995 Since its first double bill production of Jit Murad’s Gold Rain and Hailstones and Ann Lee’s Happy Families, dramalab has been at the forefront of encouraging new playwrights and producing original Malaysian work. dramalab’s Writers’ Workshops and their resulting productions have introduced a new breed of writers to the stage.

dramalab has been very closely associated with the plays of our Writer-in-Residence, Jit Murad, widely regarded as one of the foremost playwrights in Malaysia. To date, dramalab has successfully produced four of Jit’s plays, Gold Rain And Hailstones, The Storyteller, Spilt Gravy on Rice and Visits. The plays reflect Jit’s unique brand of wit and humour. Spilt Gravy on Rice has been dramalab’s most successful production so far, garnering both critical acclaim and box office success. The play received four awards at the inaugural Cameronian Arts Awards 2002, including the Kakiseni Audience Choice Award. In February 2003, presented by the Singapore Repertory Theatre, Spilt Gravy on Rice played to packed houses at the DBS Arts Theatre in Singapore.
